Brand Strategy

Brand strategy is the long-term plan for how your company is perceived, what it stands for, and why buyers should prefer it. It sits above logos and colors, defining the meaning your brand owns in the market. A clear brand strategy makes every marketing decision easier because it sets what you are and are not.

Founders often think brand is the logo and hand it to a designer. Brand strategy is the opposite end: the decision about what you want to be known for and to whom. Get it right and every downstream choice, from messaging to which deals to chase, gets easier. Skip it and you spend years sounding like everyone else and wondering why nothing sticks.

Example:

Deciding to be known as the firm that owns growth outcomes, not the cheapest agency, shapes pricing, messaging, hiring, and which clients you take, all at once.

What is the difference between brand strategy and brand identity?

Brand strategy is what you stand for and why buyers should prefer you. Brand identity is the visual and verbal expression of that strategy, such as logo, colors, and voice.

Why does brand strategy come before design?

Design expresses the strategy. Without deciding what you want to be known for first, visual choices have nothing to express and default to looking like everyone else.
