Tone of Voice

Tone of voice is the consistent style and personality of how a brand communicates in writing and speech. It is the verbal counterpart to visual identity. A distinctive tone of voice makes a brand recognizable and memorable in words alone, while a generic one makes it interchangeable with every competitor.

Tone of voice is one of the cheapest ways a small firm can stand out, because a distinctive way of speaking cannot be outspent. Most competitors sound identical, hiding behind the same corporate vocabulary. A direct, specific, human voice is remembered precisely because it breaks that pattern. It is worth defining deliberately, not leaving to whoever writes that day.

Example:

Copy that sounds like a real operator talking to another operator is remembered. Copy full of synergy and passion and results-driven blends into every competitor.

What is the difference between tone of voice and brand voice?

Brand voice is the consistent underlying personality. Tone of voice is how that personality adapts to context, though the terms are often used interchangeably.

Why does tone of voice matter for a small firm?

A distinctive voice cannot be outspent and makes you memorable. Since most competitors sound identical, a specific human voice is a cheap, durable differentiator.
